In 2004, Ryan Hunter and Sal Bossio, both members of the pop punk band, 3 Minute Warning (Hunter had been in Kingston 12 prior), started a band together from the ashes of 3 Minute Warning. Jeremy Valardi, who had played bass in 3 Minute Warning was recruited for the project (who suggested naming the band, "The Best Feeling"), as well as guitarist Brian Byrne, who had been in 3 Minute Warning and had also attended Berklee in Boston for two years. The drummer, Alex Schatz from 3 Minute Warning was in their new project, titled New Atlantic for a short time and recorded a demo with them before leaving for college. Then, Dan Gluszak, the drummer for the Post Hardcore band, Guilt like Gravity was informed by his ex girlfriend, (who was at the time, going out with Hunter), that the band, Writ in Water was looking for a drummer. He auditioned and joined the band in 2005. The band then changed its name to Envy on the Coast, taken from New Atlantic's acoustic demo entitled "Envy on the Coastline", which was written about the writer's jealousy for the success of the fellow local band, Brand New. Ryan has since admitted that his jealousy was immature and has since gotten past it.

The band recorded their demo and was noticed by producer Bryan Russell who recorded their debut EP for free in his Brooklyn based studio/loft. The EP was then sent to drummer and manager, Will Noon who sent it to labels all over the country. Booker Matt Galle from Ellis Industries signed the band to his label, PhotoFinish Records and the EP was released on September 19th, 2006. The band spent the next year touring across the country and playing New Jersey's Bamboozle Festival. The band then began writing for their full length release, Lucy Gray. They secluded themselves in Windham to help the writing process and recorded with Bryan Russell. During the process, however, the sessions were lost and the band had to rush to redo them and re master everything. The album date was pushed back to August 7th, 2007 and was released through PhotoFinish. The artwork for Lucy Gray was done by Drew Roulette, who is the bassist for the band Dredg.

Original trumpet player Marc Recio (from the Jan. 2009 horn expansion) left the band in fall 2009 and was replaced by Sari Feinstein.

Although they both knew each other from years of school band, Jeff Dietz and Taylor Sperring only became close friends during their sophomore year of high school. Randomly over the late summer of 2006, the two, via AIM, realized they were both coincidently on family vacations in Lake George, NY and decided to meet up. There, outside a diner, Jeff suggested to Taylor that they 'jam' sometime when they both return home. Soon after, the two began jamming several times a week, sometimes for hours, up in Taylor's guest bedroom, attempting to cover their favorite classic rock songs. Around November, Jeff and Taylor began looking around for other members to join and soon drew the attention of Doug Zangre, a fellow school band member who had just inherited his sister's Strat. Doug then suggested his friend James Rainis, a then freshman, to join in on bass. While James would sometimes hop on guitar to cover indie songs (Taylor once thought James had written Dispatch's The General) the group began writing a series of instrumental psychedelic rock songs including One Night Sleep in Two and Goldfish.

By January of 2007, Doug had received a keyboard for Christmas and the group needed more rehearsal space. Luckily, Taylor was able to convince his parents to let the band move down into the ' front parlor' on their victorian home. Mean while, Jeff, James & Doug were invited on board "The John Lennon Educational Tour Bus" where they wrote Okay to be Okay. That June, the band was invited to open for their high school's annual "Poetry Jam" and still undecided on a band name were listed on the program as "Lost Cause". That summer, the band continued to write songs including Tough Break . However after Taylor had a wrist injury, the band had to take brief break for the month of September. Having gathered the attention of their classmates, the band was then asked to play their high school's "Homecoming Fanfest" in October of 2008. It was before printing the flyers for the gig that the band coined the name "The Queue".

After merely two gigs, James had caught word of a local battle of the bands being held at the old local movie theater, "Islip Pavilion". The group entered and with the strong support of their friends and family, were able to somehow sell 95/100 pre-sale tickets, way over the 30 minimum to a gig on a rainy Sunday night. Surprisingly the father of the event promoter, Ryan Forsythe, was old friends with Taylor's mom and the two as toddlers used to have play dates. On the night of the gig the band, having never played a local gig outside their high school performances, packed the venue and performed for their largest crowd ever, 120 strong and full of energy. Attracting the attention of the other competing groups, some seasoned local performers, quickly created several rivals especially with the local hardcore group "Twenty Seven Dresses". Much to their luck, the band walked away with the grand prize of $1000 cash that night, an epic memory. Shortly after the win, the band once again played at their high school's "Poetry Jam" and at "The Broadway" in Amityville, NY.

In late March of 2009, Ryan Forsythe caught wind of an upcoming battle of the bands to play Long Island's very own Vans Warped Tour at Nassau Coliseum and suggested The Queue sign up. Held at The Vibe Lounge, the band progressed through the qualifications in April and made it into the finals in May. On the night of the finals, May 22nd 2009, The Queue sold out their pre-sale but was shocked when over 150 people showed in support and packed the venue full. Controversially, when they took to the stage as the last band of the night, drummer Taylor Sperring, had been informed the song limit was changed from 3 to 4 but chose to ignore the change as the 4th song, Wrong (Apartment Complex) was specifically rearranged for the competition and started with a drum intro. He is quoted saying afterwards to a judge "it's about the fans and the music, f*ck the competition". After quickly playing through 3 songs the sound engineers began to pull the equipment off the stage but as the crowd cheered for an encore, guitarist James Rainis turned to Taylor and mouthed "go". "I remember seeing one judge face palm, another who blogged about us through up the rock n' roll sign and the other in the sound booth flip us off" said Taylor. The sound engineer tried to stop the performance by shutting off the PA but the crowd began to scream the lyrics. Evidently their decision to play an encore significantly affected their odds of winning and the group placed as runner-up to Long Island band "Score 24". However, as runner up, The Queue landed a spot on the main stage at Big Giant and The Extravaganza in October 2009.

Unfortunately, Jason Lombardo had a conflict involving marching band and the group was forced to find a substitute. After contacting Erik Seiferth, a past bandmate from their "Evening of Jazz" gig back in 2007, he agreed to sub for Jason. Although Erik plays tenor sax as supposed to alto, he introduced a new dynamic to Jason's lines and has now officially joined the lineup.

In late February, with influences from the past jazz gig, James began writing a mix of Ska/Rock songs including Wrong (Apartment Complex). While the song did not originally feature a horn line, the band thought it needed something and prior to their first true gig, invited Jason Lombardo back to play with them on alto sax. In addition they wrote Sleep In (Just Leave Me Alone) and The Damage Done (Sleeping with you).

As the band continued to play shows this chant quickly became a Queue fan tradition.
